I've seen leaks of a Ren and Stimpy reboot so there's that

I have this really cool idea for a show I could make and I don't know how to execute it. Any tips?

Basically a simple cute design character and an overly detailed biblically accurate celebrity in animated shows.

Take a look.

family guy
Family Guy style is bland and boring. Just like the characters and "jokes".
hella agree on this one- tho i would disagree a bit on the jokes- but the character designs are awfully dull and boring- its obvious that theyre trynna make it that way to make animation easy and cheap

but god it is as stale and dull as a slice of stale white bread i tell u-

The show is actually hand drawn on paper too, they put in more effort to make the show look worseiu_1098465_14935479.jpg

Craig of the Creek, I hate the character designs because of that annoying calarts style, only this time it's even worse. Like what the hell is up with the tallish guy's ear? Or how the girl next to the tallish guy looks less like a normal young girl and more like a hairy gnome. Craig himself is the only character that looks okay but I'm bothered by his weird gamer dent. And don't get me started on that mutated parrot.

I haven't seen the complete show, only clips of it and it just seems generic and catters to the nerdy weird outcast kids(I was one though), but I hope it's good and the clips I watched were out of context. It's just these character design suck more than the show's lame ass food and recipes.
this maybe controversial but for me calarts artstyle looks fine for me, also craig is kinda cool as a show.
It's just not my thing, because I like a little sharpness and edge in art. The round soft style is just not my cup of tea.
I agree.

On a related note.

Normally I don't give a damn about the whole cal-arts art trend at this point. There's nothing wrong with the style in of itself, and it's also one of the more overused styles.

And you know, I get it. Some people actually like it and simplicity tends to be the big rule with animation. Hence why Hanna-Barbera were the kings in making their art style relatively in line with what was going on in the 50's all the way into the 70's and early 80's until the game changed.

But there comes a point where you see too much of it and you either hate it or become indifferent to it.
My main criticism is that it low-keys represents corporate uniformity, as Cal-Art itself wants it's student to be both creative and conform, which apparently results in many artists who have a unique art style before they enter and end developing a rather uniform-like style when they graduate. I don’t know, maybe I'm just pessimistic.
Wasn't the whole "Cal-Arts style" thing debunked years ago? I mean, most shows that fit into that stereotype only have a few bean face MCs and the rest of the character designs diverge from there. It's like saying the PPG style is just Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup. And it's not even like all bean-face shows are written by Cal-Arts graduates.

But I agree with it being corporate conformity. It even shows in the writing, with the protagonists being the same young, plucky and "make happy" archetype(that's probably too vague, but you get the point). Infinity Train was even cancelled for not wanting its 5th season to have a "child entry point".
What I mean by the Cal-Arts style is not the bean face specifically just the weird roundish art style you know.

The "Cal-Arts style" is just a term coined by John K to describe any animations he didn't like, it somehow got to the point of "bean mouth round body bad" which is a separate issue

The Problem Solverz, and I'm sorry for anyone who is nostalgic for that show.

The style is weird shapes with flashy colors everywhere.
It was originally pitched for adults, so the style would make sense for that demographic. Sadly, it was rejected by Adult Swim, even though it fits their brand.

How CN didn't reject the show on the art style alone is beyond my understanding

i don’t have any experience with pedos or other types of bad people on Roblox

Roblox is a great platform but with missed potential .

Weird people aside, Roblox only has like, 5 games I actually want to play

A lot of Roblox games are obvious bait to get children to spend their parents' money on microtransactions, hell some games charge you way too much if you just want to skip one level

Response to: what do people mean when they call animation "smooth?" Posted August 20th, 2023 in Animation

A lot of people (mostly non-animators) confuse "smooth" with "good". For instance, a lot of moments from (modern) Family Guy are "smooth", which doesn't mean they're good, they just have a lot of frames in between. That would be the more correct definition of "smooth animation", where there are a lot of frames for an action with no big jumps.

The Shenmue games are infamously known to have some of the most cheesiest dialogue and action in a video game.

If you've seen the "Years ago, I was Chinese" meme that was from Shenmue.

I appreciate everyone's advice here! I know I may have worded this a little off, but I did not mean to say that my animations had no reason to be rated average! I was more used to YouTube's overly positive feedback since it doesn't have a proper rating system, so when I posted on Newgrounds I got surprised to the mixed reception.

I hope that clears things up a bit!

The thing about higher framerates in video games is unlike animation, it actually improves the experience.

Smoother framerate literally benefits the player because not only does it look pretty, but you can also get dead on accurate results when you interact with something in game.

Your shading is really good and such and I think it's cool that you don't use motion tween really from the looks of it; so just add a little more fluidity, better comedic timing, cohesiveness in what is happening chronologically, as well as using better sound effects than only meme sound effects you'd hear in a public Discord call. I think you're already doing very well, just a little more spice and you're gravy.

Thanks for the advice! I did go overboard with meme sound effects on my Mall Stare video but I promise that was just a one time thing haha

That's a fair point but the problem is when you see people with objectively worse quality in terms of comedy and drawings get 4 to 5 stars. So it's demotivating putting a lot of work into something only to get worse results because people have way too high expectations for indie animations.

Response to: Modern Adult Animation Posted August 10th, 2023 in Animation

The problem with a lot of animated shows nowadays (mostly adult animation, like you mentioned) is that they're made by people who aren't artists or animators. With a lot of adult cartoons, they spawn from a comedian, actor, or whatever isn't an artist who got the idea of "I should make a cartoon, those are really easy to do!"

So they hire a bunch of artists to do all the drawings and there's no clear artistic vision. They're not creator-driven.

The reason so many old cartoons (and some new ones mainly from Cartoon Network and Adult Swim) are good because they're made by animators who have a vision. Even if the shows go wrong, it at least flopped with a good idea.

So... as one newbie to another - interact with community. Forums, portal, be you! Viwes on NG does not seem to be big, but the way counters here work you can be 100% sure that behind each view - even when its 10, is 10 genuine human beings, who clicked on the thumbnail and took time to peek at your work.

... which essentially is more valuable than 500-1000 views on sites like DA, or even IG. As neither records actual interest and views on your work.

Oh so I have to interact more in forums? Thanks for the advice!
