I cheated and put together a 3D scene in Unity, then rendered it from just the right angle and overlaid the original template with the center cut out:

Due to the current update the medals in your game don't work normally, what's worse, your game has selective graphics moment - depending on the hour, your game either shows all of the graphics or only half of it. At first, I thought that it was your fault, until I've learned about this thread

The "showing all graphics or only half of it" part is odd -- but I think I've worked out what could be causing it.

In the days prior to me releasing the build of the game that's live now I had a preview build up while I was working on things... I suspect that there was a bug that caused the preview build to be displayed incorrectly at times when the build that is live now was published (due to caching or something perhaps?).

At least that's the only way I can make sense of certain parts of the game disappearing (like the pyramid on level one for example) in the way you described to me via PM.

@TomFulp -- tagging you so you see this.

I've been hard at work the past two days on my entry... It's a physics platformer & hidden object game. If anyone wants to preview it I've made the preview visible to anyone here: https://www.newgrounds.com/projects/games/1709448/preview

Bear in mind that it's still very much an active work in progress! As of right now there's only one tutorial/intro level with some eggs hidden in it.

Any and all feedback is welcome (feel free to send via PM to me). At this phase of testing I'm especially interested to know what average FPS you get -- it's the top green number in the upper right (if it's hard to see/too small try entering full-screen). Again, feel free to send me this information via PM -- and include your system specs if you can (or at least your GPU/CPU type & browser).

So I want to make a song for this but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the theme and how it would pertain to audio specifically... I'm not sure how I'd go about capturing the essence of what I love about Newgrounds in audio form.

Does anybody have any examples from previous Pico days (especially audio) so I can get an idea of what the theme is all about? Thanks!

I'm new as well, but for what I've understood (You don't have to take my word for granted as I'm not sure either), you basically go to the art portal and select something that inspires you to create music, make it (if possible with the permission of the artist) and then when the contest starts but before the deadline, you reply to the submissions post that will be created with the track and a link to the original artwork.

that's what I've understood of this
By the way, in case we aren't clear: composition MUST BEGIN on or after 17 April! That is the start of the contest period, and the whole point is that we are putting people on a time constraint.

Oof... I was unaware of this (totally my fault), and had already started working on (and potentially finished) something... Guess I'm making another one later this month too :)... Thanks for clearing that up though!

Response to: Earning money with games Posted December 20th, 2019 in Where is / How to / Help!

The landscape has changed a bit since my post years ago, and @Cyberdevil is right in saying that ad revenue just isn't what it used to be.

I think this is actually a positive shift in the right direction... Ad revenue revenue is, even at it's prime, something that not only annoys the consumers of your content (who wants to watch ads??), it's only generating pennies (if that) per viewer. If you can build a following, and monetize that following directly (Patreon, for example), it just makes more sense... Instead of wasting everyone's time with ads, you're providing your fans additional value (In the form of Patreon benefits, etc) directly to your fans. If one person out of 1,000 really enjoys your content & decides to throw in a few dollars your way, you've already made as much as you would have with ads, and on top of that it's more sustainable.

Checking. Does this visualize the music real-time as it loads or does it have to load the entire song and then generate the waveform?

It's computed in real-time, although in it's current implementation it loads the whole song before it starts playing... Im not sure about limitations on streaming audio in Unity WebGL, but I think it's possible.

Response to: Music Visualizer Submission? Posted December 18th, 2019 in General

Awesome, thanks so much guys! I'll be publishing it soon then :).

@TomFulp Yeah the file size footprint is a big downside, the visualizer itself (without the music, which, side note: it loads only when needed) is at least 12mb or so, because Unity. It doesn't work in all browsers (it has issues in Edge and Internet Explorer) and doesn't work on mobile, also because Unity... >.>

Side question: Do you have an API or some way for loading songs from the audio portal? I'd be interested in implementing it if there is such a thing.

Music Visualizer Submission? Posted December 18th, 2019 in General

Hello, I'm seeking some clarification on the submission guidelines... I've created a music visualization "gadget", and I'm wondering if that's something that would be allowed here on NG.

I did see the part in the User Agreement where it says:

Do not submit something that is merely a sound visualizer set to music, or a recording of your music project timeline. If you want to promote your song in the movie portal, it should be set to original animation like a proper music video; otherwise stick to the Audio Portal.

At first I thought this would mean that a music visualizer gadget would not be allowed -- but then I reread it and thought maybe it was instead talking about if you recorded a video of winamp or windows media player or something as opposed to making your own original visualization as I've done. I've also seen a few music visualizer gadgets made with flash submitted too... So ultimately I'm unsure if this would be allowed.

You can preview the visualizer here (It's unpublished with preview permissions set to anyone... I will take it down if asked to): https://www.newgrounds.com/projects/games/1402436/preview

Would this be allowed on Newgrounds?

Thank you for your time.

API for loading Audio Portal Songs? Posted November 10th, 2019 in Programming

I've made a music visualizer with Unity & I'm curious if I could set it up to load songs from the Audio Portal... I know it can probably be done as there are some flash apps here that already do this, but is there an official API for this or are they just downloading/parsing the song & info directly from the URL?

Sorry if this has been asked before, most of the information I could find on this was likely outdated (posts from 2010, etc).

Thank you in advance!

Please do leave me any feedback you have... and I'm going to be leaving some reviews on the other submissions when I get a chance.

Sorry for the double post (I couldn't find a way to edit my previous post...) but I was able to work-around this by adding a null check for rules[r] and rules[r].selectorText around line ~213 in the newgroundsIOPlugin.jslib file. Furthermore, I think the issue I was experiencing with the textures going pink was a separate problem probably related to my browser cache.

I was having similar issues... I think something is happening where NG is keeping old versions of your files even when you upload new ones and thus causing the mismatch. One thing to try that I've had some success with is to delete the .zip from the project's publication details page before uploading a new one. Another thing worth trying is clearing your cache or using incognito/private mode.

anyone had this error before?

I'm having this same issue... I think I've narrowed it down to be something to do with what Unity WebGL template you use -- I've noticed if I use the default Unity WebGL template(with the fullscreen button) it doesn't produce this error, but when I do that it has other odd issues(it actually makes most of my shaders not render, my textures show up as pink boxes and whatnot... seems to me like it's corrupting the game files(I got a memory access out of range error at one point too...)but that's just my guess). When I play the game locally it all works fine.

If I switch to my own Unity WebGL template it doesn't have the pink textures but it crashes on launch with the rules[r].selectorText error above... The odd thing is I had it working at one point and then it started doing this... Not sure what I did differently to get it working though.

Something I've just noticed is that if I delete the uploaded file before uploading another build it seems to behave differently(as in, the pink textures aren't there sometimes, etc)... So it could be a cache issue? I've tried incognito mode with Chrome and it's not working though... very strange.

Ahh okay -- thanks for the clarification!

Response to: Earning money with games Posted May 20th, 2015 in Where is / How to / Help!

I've been making games solo for about 10 years now -- here's a bit of what I've learned:

Newgrounds shares some of the ad revenue generated on your game by pre-roll ads. There's a thing called ECPM(Effective cost per milli (think milli as in millimeter)) which is essentially how much you get paid per 1000 ad impressions(note that I didn't say views -- if the user has adblock or there is no ad available you get $0). This figure will vary based on many things, but to give you a ballpark figure the ecpm for pre-roll ads for my games tends to be around $3-4 -- note, again, that this is per 1000 ad impressions. You don't need to implement anything in your game for pre-roll ads, it just automatically happens.

With that said, that's by no means the only way to monetize a game. You can implement newgrounds flash ads in your game(if your game is made with flash of course) which will generate revenue even if your game is played on another site. Another way to earn money from a web game is to find a sponsor -- they will pay you to have their logo/branding/more games links visible from your game. You do this by contacting sponsor sites directly or through a site like FGL.com(fgl charges a 10% fee once your game is sold).

Also keep in mind you can earn money indirectly from newgrounds too -- for example if you have a video walk-through of your game on youtube that's monetized and linked from your game, naturally you'll get more views on that by having your game on newgrounds. Or you could have a mobile version of your game on google play/apple app store and link to it from within your web game. Also there's a lot of value in the feedback you will get from the newgrounds community -- while not money per-se, getting good feedback on your first game will make your second game worth more.

Response to: Question regarding score sorting. Posted May 19th, 2015 in Where is / How to / Help!

I figured I'd post some examples to make it clear what I'm talking about:

This game shows up on page 1 of sorting by score in the monthly range, with a score of around 3.7 as of posting this:

My game shows up on page 4 with the same search parameters, with a score of around 3.8 as of posting this:

This game appears on page 2, same search parameters, with a score of around 3.0:

Expected behavior(in my opinion) would be all games currently not Under Judgement sorted by score in descending order for the specified time frame... But there is definitely something else going on that I'd like to understand better.

Hey, I'm a little confused about how the "Greatest" section of the site works.
When you go to sort games by score, it doesn't necessarily sort by score -- for example a game with a 3.3 might show up higher on the list(by a page or so) than a game with a 3.8. This is the case with my latest game, it's rating has settled around a 3.8 but shows up on page 4, while other games with a ~3.8 show up on page 1... I'm not necessarily complaining, I just want to better understand how the system works (does it take into account views as well or something? or is this a bug?).

Thanks!
