If the game is laggy, consider downloading!

Sift through files, observe private conversations, and accidentally download malware in Disconnect.

As part of a new surveillance program, you have been tasked with spying into communications and subsequently terminating them if they do not meet government standards. Anything that encourages dissent, contains malware, or plans to conspire should be stopped immediately.

This is a short game I made mostly for the joy of making games again, and I tried branching out to make something I normally would never think I would make. I was a little hesitant on finishing and publishing this however my girlfriend and friends really liked it and motivated me to finish it. Also am in my final year of high school so will try my best to put out as much stuff as I can.

Here's a brief explanation of the game's mechanics if its a little confusing:

  • Your goal is to meet your objective which commonly requires you to terminate a specific connection
  • Viewing connections allow you to observe its contents, which gives you information (you're collecting your own info to go off of who you should disconnect)
  • Critical pieces of information are guaranteed to be seen, additional pieces are optional and although they help give context are not required
  • You have 2 "lives", if you terminate an innocent connection you will be given a warning, otherwise it will just continue on (Some missions have multiple connections you need to terminate)
  • If no more connections are active, you can view the information you've gathered by using the history command (in the console enter 'history <machineA> <machineB>')

Update 2023/12/6:

  • Can now enter your previous commands using the up arrow
  • Simplified M-04
  • Increased assailant's move chance timer

Hmm, this was a tough one for me! I'm a big fan of console hacking games like Uplink, Quadrilateral Cowboy, TIS-100, and the like, so this game should've been a slam dunk for me. And in theory, this game's whole eavesdropping over connections to try and find clues in text logs and files to suss out evildoers is pretty cool!

Well, it was pretty cool in theory, at least. Unfortunately what I found was an incredibly repetitive and boring game that I just couldn't stand playing any more. Compared to games like Uplink where you're multitasking, handling all sorts of different apps at once, improvising and diverting power to systems, and so on, this was incredibly restrictive and limited in player powers.

In this it was just: wait for connections lines to show up. Click on one. Decrypt the line. Play a simple minigame of matching keys. Read the single line of new info, maybe download a file. Click another line. Decrypt. Key Minigame. Read/Download. Click. Decrypt. Minigame. Read. Click. Decrypt. It's just so monotonous!

Every single mission was the same basic setup and the same goddamn process over and over and over: why can't we just get the full comm log at once, or keep the monitoring ongoing like a proper tap? Why can't we handle multiple connections at once? I want to get to the good part of combing through logs and finding out clues, but the game wastes so much time in collecting it in tiny bits-by-bit.

Basically, I think it's a cool idea, but the execution left much to be granted.

Also, as a small quibble, I really disliked the whole blurry monitor filter you've got for the game: it's not the worst but it felt a bit much and made it difficult to read words at times due to how blurry they get. Eh, but that's just my old man eyes, I guess.

good but tutorial confusing

good game but sometimes a bit confusing. also if its a CLI why is there a GUI?

Fine and a well made game, although gets some time to get used to it.
I like that it's using both a command interface and GUI at the same place.

Could see this game be developed further, although I had a bit of difficulties trying to solve most of the missions. I like that last mission being that you have to input a key. Downside about this game as it requires to type full words as compared to actual commands being truncated words formed in least space possible.

Fortunately, it wasn't much of a hassle to type that much anyhow...

Oh and I got that suicide malware or virus, ain't nice and this primitive operating environment or system has no anti-virus program *AHEM* if I weren't to note to some achievement that can be done by having a PonziPal doing the work.

While simple at best via icons and other, albeit commands as I mentioned before, being somewhat too long to type. Then again, assuming by that BIOS shown or computer starting up, makes sense to have command-line interpreter to have longer commands by being from, assuming being in 2000 or later.
Missions, itself are put together modestly, not much to overwhelm with every new feature.
I have this feeling I just could terminate the connection between those suspicious peers, yet I either mess up or not succeed.

There are quirks but it's mostly fine, just that as long you focus on what are you terminating before you decrypt another connection.

In the nutshell: Short bittersweet game, while nerds can enjoy the hell out of this somewhat boring game, it does give some intense feel to it. Commands are somewhat long but as long you're up to speed, it's all fine and might as well be dandy if lucky on few of the missions available on the game.

Four stars.
