I do not know about the 'most' hobbyists, for example, when someone above posted they work on 1600-ish, then when i open canvas of that size, it means it looks small on my drawing screen already and the details would be messy and blurry. For other poster it also works because they do not do very detailed or painterly works.
So it also means what kind of work you do. When I do writing (i.e. comic or just idle sh'tposting, as I call my mini comics) by hand, then I often do it already downscale pages because my handwriting being as it is and it works best on 1500- landscape canvas.
I normally downscale only on saving lower quality web format (jpg), except, when I do my so called 'lowkey' doodles, where I temporarily may do it in app to add text layer. Depends.
