Response to Gamemaker Studio: Now free for non-commercial games + one time purchase for non-console paid games. 2023-11-21 17:02:38
That's kind of trippy because I used to be a Game Maker main and stopped using it out of protest when they made the move to a subscription-only platform (though I did keep my version I did have .. but I'm really not a fan of subscription applications). >_<
That's really cool for people who still use Game Maker because it seems way more enticing and fair now.

This'll be fun. Last time I used it I was when it used a green gear icon and I was friends with @Banov, now of Chicory fame. Free for free games? No excuse not to return now. Fuck yeah.

Sweet! If it wasn’t for Game Maker I never would even have tried coding in the first place.

Their move to the subscription model was the reason I turned away from GameMaker. This was the only thing they could have done to redeem that in my eyes, so that's good. But I'm still cautious there may be some kind of catch. It's still hard to trust them when they pulled that crap in the first place. And are owned by Opera, a company involved in cryptocurrency and predatory loans.
I do think it still will always be preferable when possible, to use an open source engine, so you actually have full control of your own creations, instead of all your hard work being locked into a proprietary engine to be subjected to the whims of a profit-driven company.

Godot owned them so good lmao. They had to make it semi-free.
