I dunno about you, but I hate having to dig through youtube videos and ad breaks and 'sub to my patreon' while learning gamedev. I just find written guides with graphics inserted way easier to digest, because I can start and stop and easily reference whatever frames I need.

Does anyone have any good suggestions for written gamedev guides in either Gamemaker, Godot, or Construct 3? I haven't really picked what engine to settle on yet, but my focus will be 2D, roguelikes, action RPGs, something simple that I'm already familiar with.

The first promising thing I found was This guy but he's charging money for it.

Not any of the engines you listed but Emanuele Feronato has stuff for Phaser and Unity.

There's also Gamefromscratch for Godot but that is a combo of video and text at times.

Not sure if it's what you're looking for, but I wrote this tutorial for Godot geared for beginner-intermediate level on how I made a gamejam game that covers fundamentals that I felt the Godot docs didn't cover well. Text because I also don't like youtube videos, although in retrospect I prolly should've included pictures.

First step would be to download Godot (3.x and not 4.x because Godot 4 web exports have Apple compatibility issues if players try to play your game on a mac or ifone, while Godot 3 works fine on anything) and go through the Godot docs including their little demo Dodge the Creeps game, then the tutorial I wrote once you're ready for something closer to a simple game you might see on NewGrounds.

I'll take a look at your guide, so far since making my post I've been experimenting with Gamemaker's premade tutorials then messing around with the elements I learn how to manipulate. Though I've come to the realization that maybe the best route is just to draw out and plan elements for the game I'd like to make on paper, or in paint, then learn the elements of the engine I need to make it work as well as I envision.

Visual written guides are great, having lots of images to show off what's in action, or gifs.

I 100% relate, I always wanted to just have good written guides. Having to pause & rewind all the time, not be able to copy code or even read it because of the video quality… I get that videos get more views and most probably prefer it though.

The highest quality written guides I’ve seen are by Cat Like Coding. They’ve mostly focused on Unity in the past, but looks like they’ve just started with Godot tutorials.
