Sound Design for Games Help 2023-09-15 10:47:04

Hey there, I’m passionate about furthering my skills in sound design. If some of you have seen some of my work, I’ve primarily been using combinations of sound libraries or personally made “”foley””(not in studio) for our @Pukebomb toons like Everything Must Go.

I want to collaborate with some other designers to get some tips in the industry, especially on incorporating sound into games. Are there any game developers that have games I could test with helping in sound design via Wwise or FMOD?

I’m starting to want to invest in DAWs / plugins / sound libraries, and considering buying things like Soundminer to start following categorization standards. Curious of everyone’s thoughts. Thanks!

What software tools do you use for your sound design? I have a Zoom H1N and Rode NT1A mic with some rode lav mics for hardware. Software I’ve been using Audition but want to start using Reaper as it sounds that’s a better standard (Pro Tools currently a bit too expensive unless you all feel its a necessary investment for jobs).

Reaper seems to be good but I memorized all the shortcuts for Cubase and Reason and Live and its hard for me to switch. It doesn't come with any instruments in it so you'll have to carefully plan which instruments/sampler you'd want to buy to do the things you want. If you need a synth then Phaseplant might be good but it's very complicated and modular. Check Plugin Boutique every now and then to see if it goes on sale, I got it for way cheaper. Also Snap Heap was sold by the same company for super cheap on a sale so that might also happen at some point.

TDR Nova is a good free dynamic EQ if you find Reaper's to sound bad (I really don't like the high end on Reapers EQ) Ruina vst is an insane free distortion plugin to make things sound truly smashed. Vital is a free spectral synth that tries to be like Serum with modulation options
