Not wanting to be similar 2023-06-20 12:11:26

I realized this is almost impossible with the number of games that came out. Long story short I was looking at reviews for Etrian Odyssey 2 ONLY TO FIND OUT, IT HAD THE SAME TOWN IDEA AS ME!

To explain the town concept; having a town that surrounds a dungeon because adventurers going in to find treasure at the top of it with the town members selling stuff relating to/ focused on gearing up said adventurers.

So I've come to the conclusion that; my best bet is to try to be as original/ creative as possible with simple concepts. If I'm going to keep running into ideas with the same and or concepts too similar then I might as well try to find a way to make mine different.

That's a good conclusion.

I think ideas are cheap; it's in the execution. And unless you make a genuine effort to mimic another game, your personal execution will be different anyway.

I could explain an idea of mine quite in depth, and we could both go on to make it happen, but we'd still end up with a different project in the end.

Besides, a town which surrounds the entrance of a dungeon and is geared towards adventurers is not even that unique either. Not that it's possible or recommended to create something completely original in the first place.

If you are worried about being too similar to another game, the solution is to play more games like it so you see multiple possible approaches and you will be less prone to be influenced only by that one game.

I never thought of that, that's a good point; also I never knew a town surrounding a dungeon was a common trope. I still care about the approach I take to an idea as much as the execution of the idea itself. It could be my ego but I really like having my ideas stand out.

That is fine, great actually. A trope being common is one thing, but finding a unique angle to it, or a clever way to subvert it is what makes works more memorable.

All I'm saying is that you don't have to worry about having an element similar to another work in media, because your specific execution will be different, and if you even take care to put your own fresh spin on it, you can definitely make your work stand out that way.

See below on this.

To a certain extent, that is correct. Here's my interpretation of the Floor 1 map in game, no offence gamefaqs, with details on the town you may have been misinformed about.

Oh, and another thing. Etrian Odyssey games don't have maps filled out like this, an interesting concept. YOU have to make your own like I did;

iu_1001670_5461353.webp

Flaus Inn: Sleep/Nap here to fully recover for a price that always seems to go up the more you level up, like inflation goes up irl. You can also save here for free. An inn save point is so cliché it's even been mentioned on TV.

Lagaard Hospital: Here is where you revive party members for a price... that goes up depending on level seriously, this game's inflation rate doesn't make any sense. XD

Sitoth Trading: As you get items from dungeon crawling and item drops from defeating monsters, you have to sell things here to get the trader to sell you better items.

Stickleback Bar: Fetch quests and hunting quests are here to take on. Worth the trouble.

Explorer's Guild: Where you select characters/classes to make a party and set up a formation of front row and back row.

Duke's Palace: The game's whole campaign is derived from missions accepted at the Duke's Palace revolving around going up in floors.

Forest Entrance: As stated next to the in-game time of 05am, this is where to enter the dungeon, the labyrinth.

The entrance is in the south, according to the map, with the borders being as is. As for the town surrounding the dungeon, the game doesn't include making a map of the town, so it's safe to assume it's location is south and not around.

Here's something of an idea, finish what wasn't finished years ago:

All art is just copying someone else and putting a spin on it.

End of the day all that matters is if the game is fun.
