Soul Corruption Game Mechanic #1 2023-03-11 11:10:43

Figured I'd come here to ask for feedback on game mechanic ideas/ concepts. Long story short; I'm doing a tabletop game idea (assuming I stick with this and don't get side tracked)

So figured I'd ask for feedback on ideas here!

Soul Corruption

Once a soul is fully corrupted their is no going back unless your soul becomes purified which the more corrupt the soul, the harder to purify.

At 0% you're fine and healthy

At +25% you're having more murderous thoughts

At +50% you're having trouble holding onto your sanity

At +75% you're on a thread before you let the monster within take hold

At +90% you're barely able to take it with your mind constantly overcome with hunger and desire; only simple thoughts fill your mind.

At +100% you're insane; you've jumped off the deep end and pray to your gods that someone is willing to save you, rather than kill you.

At each stage you get a +1 to difficulty rating that doubles on rolling a willpower fate throw to see if you hold it together, if you fail; you only let yourself slip a little at the early stages but the worse the fail and or the further down the corruption you fail you will give in to your desires.

The idea behind this?

Long story short in lore you consume monster juice to gain more power, besides going into town to teach you a profession and a long story short on that is; professions are just money + time it cost you instead of XP.

Since this is a tabletop game, what prevents people from abusing this mechanic to go full murder-hobo?

You could say that about 99.99% of game mechanics; it's not a power boost, it's a lost of control first of all and second of all; if you have a murder hobo at the table, you were going to have problems whether this game mechanic existed or not.

The best you can do as the DM is to give the proper punishment or in other words consequences for their actions.

You could say that about 99.99% of game mechanics; it's not a power boost,

But it's a short circuit to power leveling, so it is a boost even if indirectly:

I should've explained the monster juice thing better to be honest; it's a dual leveling system, it's inspired by Shadowrunner; Shadowrunner has said system where the more tech parts you replace on yourself, the less agency you have; and likewise doesn't have a murder hobo problem, besides complex combat rules it's system having the soul part of it being a duality effect of losing your humanity being the downside.

The monster juice rewards players for taking down powerful monsters; in other words, the only way to get more monster juice is to take down a strong monster, if anything it discourages murder hobo behavior and encourages you to fight actual monsters if you want the "shortcut".
