One thing came to mind about this.
You think this system will be able to handle multiple gifs at a time? Say someone wants to make a motion (?) Comic where a page is actually a moving gif with certain panels in a loop.

Hmmm, i feel like the audio portal icon is great how it is and perfectly recognizable for users but i do understand you want to show case the album art as well.
i feel like when simply removing the hole from the design, it may come off as confusing with the default users being just a circle icon as well. Same goes if it just a square; that might be confusing with the art portal icons being the same thing.
maybe if it was icon shape more of a CD case, it'll be recognizable as a audio portal submission as well as showing the album art better. Here is my take on it:

Seeing as artists and creators are a minority.. and a poor minority at that.. you need to better gamify the site, and reward the mindless masses that seek attention and self-affirmation without turning NG into another mindless Social site. Its a new world where passive entertainment is a thing of the past.. people can't see a movie without posting about it, eat a meal without posting about it, or take a shit without posting about it.. you need to tap into those troglodytes without harming the fragile artist balance.
This is real talk. It kinda sucks but its true.
