Looking for an OST composer

Hello, friends

I am currently in the process of developing a new video game and am seeking a musician who possesses the ability to adeptly emulate a diverse range of musical styles.

The primary sources of inspiration for the game's soundtrack include:

-The slightly creepy, but still enchanting and friendly sounding score of the Luigi's Mansion OST, with a specific focus on the GameCube edition.

-The evocative and enchanting Dust: An Elysian Tail OST.

The musical direction I am aiming for can be described as a fusion of endearing charm with a subtle undertone of melancholy. The game is characterized by a monochromatic visual theme, punctuated only by occasional bursts of color, and I intend for the soundtrack to harmonize with this aesthetic.

This is a paid opportunity (thinking about $20 per song as this is purely self funded), so please feel free to shoot a direct message if interested.

Thank you for your attention and interest. Details will be delved into further including concept art and an in depth understanding of the plot and setting.

My friend, 20 per song is pittance to most. I appreciate that you raised the funds for this yourself but typically, you're looking at a lot more than that, per minute, and then you need to factor in revisions (because some will charge after X number of revisions).

Youre right! Prices can be further discussed of course. It was only a base price idea since i know some people have commissions open and have to work extra hard to tailor it specifically.

I only put it down so people knew that it was a paid oppertunity rather than something I was just flinging into the air for free.

I mean, if memorable is what you're looking for and your prices are negotiable, I'm interested because memorable is what I do. 🙏🏽

What do do you charge, Trois?

I find the secretive approach to people's pricing really unhelpful for the community. Here's how I do it:

I charged 2 ways, by the hour, or with a day Rate. For freelance work I charge £34 an hour or £250 for a day rate. A day equals 8 hours, so you save £72 a day if you pay the day rate. For a standard 3 to 5 mins track, I know I can do that in 24 hours over a week, so at 8 hours a "day" that's £750 for 3 days. So that's 3 days of time worked over that space of a week, so it's a week turn around. If you wanted it as a rush job then it's an extra £144 charge, if you want it delivered in the three days. That's all without any revisions, revisions I usually charge at my hourly rate.

Hope this helps people set their prices, don't under cut yourself. You have to charge at a rate that reflects the fact you're a skilled worker. So at least double the minimum wage in your given country, ideally closer to 3 times.

If people can't afford your price, then you don't do the work.

I don't make a living as a full time freelance musician, but I've done a number of high profile jobs, BMW and The Asian Awards being the 2 biggest names I've worked for, and for those clients, this is how I charged. For clarification that's for music produced for a single time performance/presentation.

If the music you're making is going to be synced and be part of a long running campaign, then you need extra compensation or residual paymemts as part of your contract. So if you make music for an advert say, that's going to run for a year and your not going to get residuals, you need to be charging at least £10,000 as your win fee, and like £4000-£5000 for your demo charge.

That's just my personal view/experience.

It would be useful I think if we were all more open about this.

I can't edit the main post but I do want to mention that the price is negotiable! I'll be sure to pay appropriately. Im looking through options and im still conceptualizing ideas so rest assured I'll make sure to communicate further as I progress. :)

I probably shouldve just suggested people tell their commission prices in the comments of this thread. That probably would've been a better idea ^^;

And some of us face unnecessary stigma for even mentioning prices, and can't win. Just a few short years ago I was already harangued as "devaluing the profession" when I was an asylum seeker and constrained nonprofit, and now if I mention my per minute rate, I know I'm going to be opening myself up to further abuse.

But this is the rate I charge for session work and composition, for full transparency because fuck it, I know the hate mail will come anyway, it's a negotiable £200/minute, and that rate increases when I factor in vocal layers.

It would've. Make that a lesson for next time, or at least have the option for people to DM you their rates if they fear being stigmatised for doing the work they do.

That wasn't aimed at yourself Trois and for the record I think £200/minute is more than reasonable, any body giving you abuse for that isn't worth considering.

I mean, I've known you to offer your services and do tonnes of work for years and years, without seeking any compensation. Your particular skills with music are also so specialised and you've worked on developing them hugely over the years, so I think your services are worth AT LEAST that, and that you're well within your rights to increase your own value reflecting your continued growth as a seasoned composer over the years.

Well I am definitely known for melancholic and dark pieces, the "endearing" part I'm not sure. Most of my work reflects my life, which has been quite dark and melancholic but I also have another side which is calm and peaceful. My catalog is quite large, but this year I only have 2 published albums as I had writers block most of the year. But I'm back in the game, just released an EP. If you take a listen and are interested, I'd be willing to try and work something out, or have a conversation at least. I haven't done many commissions before, generally i make music for the sake of creating and self-expression, it's like therapy to me. If you need a place to start with my repertoire dm me.
